In 2020, within the framework of the Ministry of Culture project, CULTURE PRO, Orléans School of Art and Design, with the support of its partners, launched the CYBER_CAVE project.
Following the lockdown measures of the COVID-19 pandemic, our societies have experienced remote social life made possible by Internet networks. The question of physical distancing, at the heart of current interests, urges creatives, cultural institutions or higher education establishments to invent, or re-invent, in terms of cultural and artistic production and dissemination.
Subsequently, Orléans School of Art and Design offers to create a third place metaverse (i.e. a virtual place of creation, production and distribution for a community of makers, in particular, young designers, able to interact socially with the aim to devise, develop, experiment and share plastic artworks, plays, dance, music, architecture and design within this area, or as an extension of the physical world).
This creation space is called CYBER_CAVE. The CYBER_CAVE crosses extended realities (virtual and augmented) and the Internet (Web). It allows remote access to a virtual world of conception, creation and dissemination of art, design, architecture, and dance etc…
The CYBER_CAVE will be devised and developed at ÉSAD Orléans with the latest extended reality technologies.-
Following the trailblazing 1990s, today (XR) extended reality technology; (VR) virtual reality, and (AR) Augmented Reality)has reached a form of maturity. Indeed, we can note its development beyond video games and science, in the world of art and design (in international fairs and biennales, European schools of art and design, events and exhibitions), particularly because of the reliability of the software and equipment.
Today, in the Centre Val-de-Loire Region and on the national level, these technologies must be accessible to young designers, artists, engineers and collectives, proposing projects renewed by the dynamics peculiar to the Y generation or “digital natives” and the Z generation “post-digital native”, also called C – Communication, Collaboration, Connexion et Creativity).
The young designers will be accompanied and overseen by art and design professionals, entrepreneurs and engineers. The professionalism and community spirit, between the creatives and teams associated with the projects, are at the centre of this organisation, mobilizing local, national and international partners.
This place and its equipment allow any creator of a project, among other things:
- to create extended reality works as such
- to experiment, develop, test hypotheses virtually in the creation and design phase
- to disseminate, show and communicate on the project in a virtual or hybrid manner; (vr) ou (ar)
- to enable the prototyping stages for designers, by going from simulation tools to digital manufacturing tools
- to extend or simulate the stage for live entertainment artists, for example by articulating a tangible space in a virtual one…
