The École supérieure d’art et de design d’Orléans is a higher education institution for the arts, under the educational supervision of the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation.
ESAD Orléans’ artistic and scientific project focuses on the challenges of the digital environment, at the intersection of technological, industrial, ecological and political issues. ESAD Orléans’ training policy is based on the gradual linking of teaching and research in the three cycles offered by the school, and on the introduction of a strong artistic dimension to design.
The Centre de Biophysique Moléculaire (CBM) – CNRS
The Centre for Molecular Biophysics is a CNRS research unit (UPR CNRS) under the supervision of CNRS Chimie (INC) and secondarily attached to CNRS Sciences Biologiques (INSB). It has an agreement with the University of Orléans and the University of Tours. The CBM conducts research at the interface of chemistry, biology and biophysics, with the aim of understanding the structure, dynamics and interactions of biomacromolecules, from the atomic level to the cell and organism. The fundamental research developed at the CBM closely links to applications in the field of medicine and cosmetics.
The Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) is a public multidisciplinary research organisation under the authority of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation. The CNRS’s raison d’être is to carry out fundamental research for the benefit of society in all fields of knowledge. To meet the major challenges of the present and the future, its scientists explore life, matter, the Universe and the workings of human societies. Internationally recognised for the excellence of its scientific work.
Organisation of the Residency
The artist in residence will work at the CBM (Centre for Molecular Biophysics) CNRS laboratory in conjunction with ESAD Orléans’ ECOLAB research unit.
ECOLAB. The ECOLAB ESAD Orléans research unit is primarily concerned with research into the relationship between human beings and non-human beings. It also trains students in critical, archaeological and futurographic thinking, equipping them with technical and artistic mastery. At the crossroads of disciplines and reflecting our times, which are preoccupied with technological, ecological, digital and political issues, its programmes contribute to thinking about the design of time and technical media, graphic design and mobile interfaces, the design of space and common goods, and the design of connected objects and data.
Le CBM (Centre for Molecular Biophysics). Interdisciplinary by nature, the CBM brings together chemists, physicists and biologists to carry out research into molecules of living organisms and molecules for living organisms. CBM research can be
grouped into 5 areas: Chemistry and Imaging, Fundamental Mechanisms of Life, Biomolecular Engineering, Targets and Therapeutic Innovations, Vectorisation and Formulation.

LE STUDIUM Loire Valley Institute for Advanced Studies, a home for international researchers in the region, works in partnership with all the regional institutes and research centres. The institute welcomes researchers from all scientific disciplines, with an average attendance of around twenty, who meet on the first Thursday of each month for an interdisciplinary seminar, LE STUDIUM Thursday. This meeting, at the crossroads of the different research themes presented and represented, provides an opportunity for rich and innovative exchanges, leading to the development of collaborative projects and the sharing of knowledge. Introducing design thinking and its technical resources is a way o of enhancing an inspiring interdisciplinary vision.
Desired profile
The candidate will have to justify a plastic work falling under one of the fields of practice below:
- Data art and design, parametric 3D modelling and digital fabrication. For a residency in connection with ESAD Orléans’ Objects, crafts and computation research programme (https://occ.esadorleans.fr/),
Or - Generative graphics, creation with artificial intelligence, video games. For a residency in connection with the Edition, Media, Design (https://emd.esadorleans.fr/) research programme at ESAD Orléans.
The candidate must have lived in a country other than France for at least 3 years (no more than 12 months in France during this period), and must demonstrate:
- An international background
- An interest in science.
Artistic project
The artistic project will echo the research carried out by the CBM-CNRS research institute (see links above).
The residency will result in the creation of a work or prototype produced in collaboration with ESAD and the CBM.
The work or prototype may be exhibited at CBM, on the CNRS campus, at ESAD and during events organised by LE STUDIUM.
Other commitments
As part of the residency, the awarded artist will be invited to :
- lead an educational workshop at ESAD Orléans in connection with his/her residency project.
- give a lecture aimed at the general public
- give a presentation to the community of researchers hosted by LE STUDIUM.
At the end of the residency, there will be a feedback event.

The awarded artist will have free access to the CBM laboratories, and will be able to spend time discussing and observing with the team (or teams) and scientists closest to his/her artistic project. Subject to feasibility or availability and compliance with safety regulations, it will be possible to carry out certain specific scientific experiments as part of the residency.
ESAD Orléans, 14 rue Dupanloup et rue de l’Abreuvoir – 45000 Orléans
The awarded artist will benefit from a dedicated workspace at ESAD Orléans, access to the school’s technical workshops and personalised advice from workshop managers.

At ESAD Orléans, the artist will work with the team of one of the art and design research programmes of ECOLAB, ESAD Orléans’ research unit.
LE STUDIUM, Loire Valley Institute for Advanced Studies, 1, rue Dupanloup – 45000 Orléans.
The awarded artist will have access to the Hôtel Dupanloup, the International University Centre for Research, where LE STUDIUM Loire Valley Institute for Advanced Studies is based hundred meters away from the ESAD premises. The artist will be invited to take part in the scientific exchanges and meetings organised by the institute to encourage cross-disciplinary exchanges. The artist will have the opportunity to broaden his or her scientific knowledge through meetings with international researchers
present during the residency period and according to his or her interests.
Benefits
The Arts-Sciences Residency LE STUDIUM 2024 award includes:
- Travel expenses (economy class) up to a maximum of 800 EUR upon receipt;
- Fully furnished accommodation adapted to the size of the guest artist’s family;
- A daily living allowance of 50 euros per day will be paid to the invited artist (i.e. approximately 1500 euros/month);
- Orléans Métropole public transport season ticket;
- Administrative support for relocation (visa, bank, accommodation, insurance, schooling, etc.);
- Full integration into an international research community in the Centre-Val de Loire region;
- French lessons if interest.
Administrative arrangements
An ESAD Orléans-CBM-LE STUDIUM Loire Valley Institute of Advanced Studies partnership agreement will be drawn up and the winning artist will sign a collaboration agreement.
A LE STUDIUM dedicated staff member will accompany the awarded artist throughout the process of arriving in France and during her/his residency.
Selection procedure
Applications will be reviewed and selected by a panel composed of:
- Emmanuel Guez, Director, ESAD Orléans
- Caroline Zahnd, Research Director, ESAD Orléans,
- Two members of LE STUDIUM Loire Valley IAS Scientific Council,
- Two members of the CNRS-CBM research institute,
- Two experts of the artistic and cultural sector.

Applications may be written in either French or English. A summary in English AND French must be included.
It must include the following elements:
- A curriculum vitae ;
- A text presenting the artistic approach (maximum 3500 characters) ;
- A text presenting the residency project (maximum 3500 characters);
- A summary in English AND in French of the residency project must be included (1000 characters):
- An artistic dossier (portfolio);
- Articles or texts relating to the artistic dossier (written by the artist or a third party).
