The Narrative and Publication Design specialisation (formerly Graphic Design) explores contemporary narrative forms. It encourages students to understand how every graphic, formal or technical choice shapes the message, determines its expression and influences the reader’s or viewer’s experience, or how to tell a story, convey information or express an opinion through today’s media – books, the web, animation, social media, posters or physical spaces?
A creative approach to storytelling requires an understanding of editorial forms in order to better question them, to consider the interactions between physical and digital media, and to imagine how a narrative might unfold within an installation or across the public space.
Finally, the programme aims to foster a critical perspective on publishing tools. Just as printing techniques, the choice of paper or binding style, and software are all part of the editorial process and determine the graphic outcomes of student projects. Questioning tools, repurposing them, combining them and pushing their boundaries is one of the key challenges of the programme, where each project becomes a visual narrative to be invented.
